Indianapolis is one of the most exciting cities to explore in the mid-west. The city has amazing walking and bike friendly areas all around that will make for some great self guided tours. Here are 10 places around Indy that are worth checking out either on foot or on a bicycle.


1. Indianapolis Canal Walk

The Indianapolis Canal Walk is a pedestrian path that loops around the downtown Indy Canal. The 3 mile loop will expose you to some great downtown architectural views and also take you past some great tourist attractions such as the Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana State Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the White River State Park.

2. White River State Park To Monument Circle

White River State Park is located downtown and easily makes for a great starting point because there are so many attractions nearby such as the NCAA Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, and Indiana State Museum. The park also has some great spaces for outdoor relaxing, sight seeing, and outdoor concerts.

As you move on from the state park towards downtown Indianapolis, you will end up on the pedestrian and bike-friendly Indy Cultural Trail. The trail will take you towards multiple places including the Monument Circle which is one of the top architecture attractions in the city.

3. Circle City Industrial Complex to Mass Ave

The Mass Ave District is one of the top entertainment districts in downtown Indianapolis. There are a lot of great dining options in this area including the Garage Food Hall. The Mass Ave District is also connected to the Circle City Industrial Complex via the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. The Circle City Industrial Complex is a renovated warehouse with local breweries and other entertainment options such as Fowling Warehouse Indianapolis.

4. Broad Ripple Park to Indianapolis Arts Center

Broad Ripple is a historic district located on the north side of Indianapolis. The district is a vibrant area with plenty of restaurants and bars. The popular Monon Trail is over 20 miles long and also runs through Broad Ripple.

If you are a dog lover, the Broad Ripple Park would be a great place to start. For art lovers, the Indianapolis Arts Center would be a great place to start your Broad Ripple exploration.

5. Garfield Park to Fountain Square

Fountain Square is another great historic district located on the south end of downtown Indianapolis. The Pleasant Run trail connects Fountain Square to Garfield Park where you will find the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory.

There are also great live entertainment venues in Fountain Square like Hi-fi Indy and White Rabbit Cabaret. You may want to explore this trail if you are a music lover.

6. Butler To Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park

The Central Canal Towpath is an unpaved trail that runs along the White River. The walk from Butler University to the Fairbanks Art & Nature Park along the Central Canal Towpath is a unique walk filled with gorgeous views of the Butler campus, the White River, and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.

If you have plenty of exploration energy once you get to the Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, you can also chose to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art for spectacular indoor and outdoor art exhibits.

7. Lawrence

The city of Lawrence is located on the east side of Indianapolis. It is also home to Fort Harrison State Park, which began as a military base in 1906. Much of the historic charm around the vicinity of the park has been wonderfully preserved.

Lawrence also has a local dining/brewery scene, Lawrence Community Park and a cultural campus that includes a theater and a large modern playground.

8. Ellenberger Park to Irvington

Ellenberger Park is located on the east side of Indianapolis. The park is filled with various events during the summer time. It is also conveniently located near the historic town of Irvington which has one of the most charming homes in the city.

You will find a few good local breweries and dining options in Irvington. The Pennsy trail also starts in the district and goes further east of the city.

9. Riverside to 16 Tech

This path is great for biking or for those that want to test their walking endurance. Riverside park is an enormous park located on the west side of Indianapolis with many wonderful sites and amenities.

The White River Parkway Trail goes alongside Riverside park and takes you downtown towards 16 Tech. 16 Tech is an innovation district in Indianapolis that also includes The AMP at 16 Tech which is a market place with great local food vendors.

10. Speedway

The historic town of Speedway is situated on the west side of Indianapolis and is also home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the Indy 500 takes place.

Walking along the B&0 Trail will give you a great self guided view of the Speedway area. When you get to Main Street, there are plenty of local dining options. If you like go-carting, you may want to check out Speedway Indoor Karting.
